Paintings by Jacob Classon are hard to find, only a few appeared on the market. Classon worked in the atelier of Anthony van der Croos in ca 1658. The striking gold yellow sky which is typical for the work of Van der Croos is clearly visible in the current painting. The time of day is sunrise, the sun rises from the east and the light shines on the eastern part of church and tower.

Jacob Classon 1658–1675

Jacob Classon was a Dutch landscape painter active in The Hague between 1658 and 1675. His precise birth and death dates are not known. He is documented in 1658 as a painter working in the studio of Anthonie Jansz. van der Croos, one of the leading landscape specialists of The Hague, and is recorded by the Getty Research Institute as Van der Croos’s pupil. Classon’s surviving and documented work centres on landscapes and topographical views, particularly scenes around The Hague and Scheveningen. His subjects include dunes, beaches, villages, architectural landmarks and broad views in which small figures animate the landscape. A signed view of the old church at Scheveningen, for example, closely follows a composition by Van der Croos, demonstrating how closely Classon worked within his teacher’s artistic vocabulary.
